The Horseshoe Open’s main event finished up under the lights on Saturday with the pro invite only big air contest. A firework display set the night ablaze as riders dropped in on the fifteen-feet high and sixty-feet to the knuckle jump. Following the fireworks the jam was on.
Samm Denena could be the story of this year’s Horseshoe Open. Her win in big air capped off a perfect weekend that included a win in Friday’s rail jam, and a slopestyle victory earlier in the day on Saturday. Denena may have been the only female hitting the big air jump; however, that didn’t stop her from charging. Denena spun back three off the jump on numerous occasions and her giant method into the night sky was a thing of beauty.
On the men’s side the jam session seemed to bring out the best in everyone. As the riders got more comfortable with the jump bigger and bigger tricks began to be put down.
Following a scary crash by one of the ski competitors, which caused a lengthy delay, the five finalists were announced. Craig Gouweloos, Michael Izzard, Kevin Konings, Mike Osachuk, and Christian Primrose all made the best of two run final. Primrose dropped first and won the contest on his first run with a double. The remaining four competitors all washed on the first run of finals. In the second run, the opposite occurred, Primrose fell, and Osachuk, Izzard, Gouweloos, and Konings all stuck their tricks forcing the judges to make some difficult decisions regarding who would be next to Primrose on the podium.
Primrose is two-thousand dollars richer after his win at the Horseshoe Open. His victory in big air has earned him a ticket to the Ride Shakedown at Mont Saint-Sauveur on March 31st.
Gouweloos (2nd) and Izzard (3rd) also enjoyed a nice pay day taking home second and third place respectively. Both Gouweloos and Izzard reached the podium for the second time at the Horseshoe Open. Gouweloos finished third in the rail jam and Izzard won the AM Slopestyle contest.
A round of applause has to go to the team at Horseshoe Resort, all the riders, and the sponsors for making the Second Annual Horseshoe Open such a memorable event. We look forward to you turning three.
