This past Saturday at Mt Seymour was the first Vans Hi-Standard Big Air contest of the 2013 season; this was the second year that Seymour was host this great event and as always the park staff did an amazing job getting the course ready for the riders. The contest is referred to as being similar to the air and style contests of the early 2000s. No rotations over a 720 are permitted keeping the playing field a little more level and making the riders really work on standing out with their style. Vans thought that with all the progression in snowboarding and people stomping triple cork’s, that we should take a step back and focus on the root of snowboarding, the style.
There are two categories of riders for the contest, 15 and under and 16 and over, both groups were throwing down today trying to take home some of the prize money. In the 15 and under group, s of the standout riders from the day were Liam Stevens, Quinn Dubois David Lee and Kevin Dzah, these guys were working hard all day! The 16 and over group had no shortage of talent, some of the stand outs were Keegan Filmer, Tyler Ravelle, Tristan Hansen and Gordon Emery. Popper Al won 300 bucks for best trick and Keenan Filmer won MVP.
The next stop for the Vans Hi-Standard Big Air is Feb 09 at Canada Olympic park in Calgary Alberta. Here are some of the shots from the day. Video's at the bottom.
