Matt Belzile was born in Ottawa and raised in Aylmer, a small town in Quebec across the river from Ottawa. He first strapped into a snowboard in ‘96 at Ski Vorlage in Wakefield, QC, but soon discovered a closer ski hill, Camp Fortune, 15 minutes from his house. Belzile and his best friend, JF Leduc, earned free season’s passes by assisting ski instructors. They were required to show up at the instructors’ meeting spot every hour, on the hour, to see if any instructors needed help. If none was needed, they were free to ride for the next hour. Since Camp Fortune didn’t have a park at the time, Belzile and Leduc would sneak off and build their own jumps, which inevitably got them in trouble with ski...
