SASS session 2 Snowboard Podcast from Cerro Catedral, Argentina

Bariloche, Argentina -- Craig Beaulieu, Andrew Burns and Natalie Gough are down in Argentina at SASS (South America Snow Sessions) and having a killer time. Check out this video of their second week there. It's enough to make summer desk jockeys like me pretty damn jealous. Booking a flight right now...

The 5 Ws with Beau Bishop

As a graduate of the Gnarcore Academy Beau was taught the three golden rules to make it in the shred biz: let your riding do the talking, surround yourself with a solid group of friends, and, the most important one of all, enjoy every minute of it. He has excelled in all of the above. Nice work Beau.

What's it like to have a heli shoot as your first day back filming?

The 5 W's with Chris Dufficy

Known for his constant ear-to-ear smile Duff could easily be called the nicest guy in snowboarding. He’s come back from more injuries than most any rider and each time he does he’s stronger and that smile seems to get bigger.

Seb Toots.

What is it like being head coach at camp?

A lot of stress and organization at the last moment.

Where have you ridden the best pow?

Not telling you, but definitely up around the Whistler area.

When will the Canucks win the cup?

When they get a good big center man.

Why are you always smiling?

The 5 W's with Chris Rasman

Rasman's a guy that constantly feels the urge to backflip off of anything in sight. Whether he’s riding or just walking down the street he's addicted to the backie. Couple that with the genetics passed down from his champion mogul snowboarding father and you’ve got one serious boarder.

Name: Chris Rasman

Birthdate: November 7th, 1988

Hometown: Vancouver, B.C.

Now Reside: Whistler, B.C.

Sponsors: Quiksilver, Lib Tech, Northwave/Drake/Bakoda, Grouse Mountain, Alterna Films

Who did you look up to when you started snowboarding? I really looked up to my dad Rudy, Jorli Ricker, Mike Michalchuk and Terje Haakonsen.

What's it like to be the son of a world mogul champion? Pretty cool. It’s nice to know when I'm bombing groomers and a hairy situation catches me by surprises, its in my blood to react. Or I can at least call up Rudy and ask him what to do.

Where did you travel to this year? Turkey, Aspen and Big White. Argentina might be coming this August, conditions depending.

When will Kiefer Sutherland stop saving the world in 24 hours? I don't know. When the show gets canceled? I don't watch 24.

Why do people ski? One of three possibilitys. One, they like rollerblading. Two, something's wired wrong in their brain that causes them to want to ski. Three, they didn't get the memo.

Sponsors: Bataleon Snowboards, Nike Snowboarding, Dragon Optics, Pow Gloves, Ogio, Union Bindings, Coastal Riders, Mount Seymour.

Who's an up and coming rider we should watch out for? Since there are so many riding styles now, I'm going to have to categorize it. Jibber: Cool Kid Jake Kuzyk/Scotty Brown. Contest Kid: Mark McMorris. Backcountry: Devun Walsh. All around boarder: Logan Haubrich and Party Snakes.

What sort of trips did you do this season? SBC Mag trip to Japan, Goodtimes.

Where was the snow that was supposed to be in Vancouver? Japan, that’s why we went.

When are you heading back to the epic terrain of Blue River, B.C.? SSSHHHH It sucks, don't go.

Why do so many good riders come out of Mount Seymour? Seymour has some of the best terrain to shred on, lots of natural jumps, and hips, etc... Riding these types of features gets you ready for the real deal. Now that Seymour has one of the best snowboard parks on the North Shore a lot of good rail riders are starting to emerge.

On The Come Up: Interview with Regina Ripper Mark McMorris

We caught up with Mark just after Superpark 14 ended in Mammoth. He had been hanging out in Cali for a few days at the Oakley headquarters before flying to Whistler for a heli jump shoot on Blackcomb--sounds like he’s already living the life of an established pro. Thing is, before his win at the Ride Shakedown in Saint Sauveur this spring we hadn’t seen or heard anything about him aside from a small shared video part with his brother in the NuuLife movie 6’s and 7’s. Then pow, he’s on the podium at one of the most high profile snowboard contests in Canada after throwing a Double Cork Backside 10 to Front Blunt 450 out. So the question is, how did a 16 year old from Regina learn to ride so well?

How does a kid from Saskatchewan learn how to do Double Corks?

Oh geeze. Well, my family always went to the mountains in Alberta when we were growing up. I played hockey, wakeboarded, skated, pretty much everything. I tramp trained lots too. I landed my first Double Cork in April last year. It was in my part in the NuuLife movie 6’s and 7’s.

Aside from your win at the Shakedown what other contest placements did you have?

I won the LG World Cup Slopestyle in Calgary and I got third at a TTR event in Livigno, Italy. It wasn’t a podium but I took fifth at The Artic Challenge, which was cool. I went to the European X-Games too, so yeah, it was a good year.

Who are you riding for?

Oakley, O’neill, Class Five Snowboards, The Source, and Camp Of Champions.

Are you going to be coaching at C.O.C. this summer?

I won’t be coaching ‘cause I’m too young. I need to be 18 to coach but I’m doing a Send It With session. I’m going to be there the first week ‘cause there’s the Billabong Ante Up thing. I’ll go for the last week, The Source week, too. I’m excited to get up there.

Dude, Whistler/Blackcomb had record-breaking snowfall this year so…

Yeah, so there’s going to be enough snow to build a really good park hopefully.

Was the win at the Shakedown a game changer for you? Did it help you out with your sponsors at all?

That was big influential thing with Oakley. A lot of it was my placement at the Artic Challenge too, but it was only really official with Oakley after the Shakedown. It was just nice to be on the podium with two of my best friends that I’ve been traveling with all year long. To be up there with Eric [Willet] was sick. To see Seb get second after getting injured was cool; it was O’neil on the podium.

How did you get the invited to Super Park?

Pat [Bridges] asked me to go. I was there last year. He asked me to go to The Launch, the kind of junior event last year. At The Launch last year he asked me if I wanted to go to Super Park and he invited me back this year. I got lots done. I got some shots with Sandbox.

Are you not filming for NuuLife anymore?

I’ll have some shots in there but a bit with both.

What’s the future for you? Is it more competing or more filming?

I’m super young still so I’m definitely going to film as much as I can but I’m also going to compete as much as I can. I’m going to shoot photos as much as I can with whoever I can. There’s lots of time to film backcountry and all that when I’m older.

Mark killing it at Blackcomb May 13th, 2010. Keep an eye out for the footage this fall. Scarth photo.

The 5W's with Rusty Ockenden

With famous tracks like “Amish Paradise” and “Fat” under his belt Weird Al Yankovic could be sitting back and counting his money. That isn’t his style though so he’s decided to pursue a career in snowboarding while bartending at one of Whistler’s best sushi restaurants. When he isn’t riding or slinging drinks you can find him creating one off face masks out of burlap and god knows what for his new company KRAM. Ya Al, your the man.

Name: Rusty Ockenden
Birthdate: April 8, 1986
Hometown: Summerland, British Colombia
Now Reside: Whistler
Sponsors: Forum, Foursquare, Whistler/blackcomb, Showcase, Smith, Gravis, Skullcandy, and of course KRAM

Who's on the KRAM pro team?
Well the team manager, Jake Blattner (we just call him shane though), is keeping the team super tight for the first couple seasons. Right now the pro team is just Logan Haubrich, and the AM team is myself, and my roommate Mike Pederson.

What's the 5 year plan for KRAM?
year 1 (this year): Kram gets onto snowboardcanada.com (check!)
year 2 : Kram signs Devun Walsh
year 3: Devun Walsh's prowess puts Kram into the limelight and people start buying!
year 4: Everyone involved is filthy rich from selling cheap imported goods at hugely inflated prices
year 5: Be rich and start buying stocks.

Where the best place for Sushi in Whistler?
Haha good lord. Well to be honest most people who say they love "sushi" and then go out and order chiken kara-age rolls and California rolls should just go to Samurai since it's the cheapest and fastest. If you want to get hammered and party with friends go to Sushi Village because it's a riot and so fun there. If you want to take a girl out on a date bring them to Nagomi Sushi because it's the newest, nicest looking place. If you just want the best food then go to Sachi and see if they will let you order the "rusty roll"! ahi tuna, prawn tempura, avocado, spicy mayo, tobiko and unagi sauce. so greasy

When did you decide to become a Weird Al impersonator?
When Gerhard and John decided to be huge dicks and make the comparison on their hotshot website !!!

Why does Scarth always put you down?
Well I can only speculate. It could be because I peed on his truck in Blue River, or because I laughed at him when his stupid sled wouldn't start. It might even be because he knows that one day when he is sleeping I’m going to punch him right on the lips. Or put a bar of soap in my used snowboard socks and hit him in the groin with it. I really am.

We've still got a few Am-bedded's left to go before the season is over. Here is Scott Balkwill's part from a Saskatchewan vid called Second Wind. Dude is 20 years old and doesn't have any "legit sponsors, just a buddy who owns a shop called Undergrind. They dont even carry snowboard shit." Word.

Leanne Pelosi - Travelogue

Between filming for Standard, fulfilling sponsorship obligations, coaching for MGT and High Cascade Snowboard camps, and hitting a few contests along the way Leanne Pelosi logs more air miles than the average Canadian family. Come to think of it she probably has pretty solid mileage on her car, truck and sled too, which is why we caught up with her (yeah we don't know how we did it either) for the first installment of the "Travelogue."

Name the last four places you've been to and why you were there.
Nelson, BC—filming at Baldface
Aspen, CO—Winter X Games
Whistler, BC—filming
Vancouver/Whistler, BC—Olympics

What was the highlight of your Baldface trip?
Kimmy (Fasani), Hana (Beaman), and I were filming for Standard. We met the Hick's brothers, a local shred posse out of Slocan. They were really cool and took us to their spots, and let us hit their jumps. The weather was pretty bad, just low cloud and grey, so we couldn't film much, but we had a really fun time. It was a good start to the season to get our powder legs on and huck our meat on some fun jumps.

How did the X Games go for you?
I bruised my heel, that was lame! I'm lucky though, because my friend Vicki works for Sole and I got hooked up with some foam footbeds. I wear two thick foam footbeds and a gel heel cup now. I'll pretty much have a pillow under my foot for the rest of the season. Check them out www.yoursole.com.

What was the worst thing that happened on your travels?
We had the worst luck ever with sleds! First, Standard Films' director, Travis Robb's sled broke down, and he had to get it helied out. It costs like 1,000 bucks. Then Ryan Tiene's suspension blew. Then, Hana's sled broke down in the middle of Brandywine right near Grizzly Lake. Normally if your sled breaks down out there you can get it helied out directly to No Limits, the shop in Squamish, but because of the Olympics it was a no fly zone. It was a long double back, the legs were burning! We doubled from Brandywine to Seagrams and out. It took two weeks to get the sled helied out! Thank goodness she was on another trip in Turkey while this was going on. The following week, I went out with Kimmy and I could smell something kind of weird like her brake was on or seized or something. She said all of a sudden this bright light like a flashlight blasted her in the face and her sled burnt to the ground. Luckily we weren't that far from the parking lot, so we went back to the truck and got a toboggan, and we scooped whatever was left of her sled onto the toboggan. It was such a mess.

But you got some good shots and it was all worth it right?
Actually the weather was quite variable. It's kind of depressing how hard we tried in Whistler. It was always something; sled situation, almost bangers, avy's, etc. One day we were out shooting with Crispin Cannon, and he was checking out a jump landing for us. The whole face looked like an egg cracking, two feet deep. Luckily he didn't get caught in it, he hopped off his sled and the stuff that cracked above him stopped. An hour later, we saw Jake Koia from the Sandbox crew do the sickest cab 10, and get buried to his neck in the landing.

Okay, let's leave the sketchy stuff for a minute now. Did you have a good time during the Olympics?
Yeah my friend Helen got second in the bobsled. It was pretty cool, she actually got a track record but the score is based on four runs and is cumulative, so that's why she ended up second even with the fastest time on the track. I met up with her before the event, and she took me on a tour up at the track. Her parents got me tickets for the final day, so me and a bunch of friends from high school went and cheered her on. We all went to the awards ceremony too. It was pretty crazy hanging out with her in Whistler after that. We'd got to a bar, and she'd get mobbed from paparazzi or fans.

What's your best memory from the last few trips?
We ended up playing hockey in the street in Vancouver's Yaletown during the Olympics, the day Canada won the men's hockey gold medal! Some guy just handed me a stick and we played in the middle of the street. It was classic Canadian style.

What's the funniest story from your travels?
Well this is all hearsay, but it's pretty funny. Jeff [Leanne's boyfriend] was with Christy Chaloux [Transworld photographer] during the Olympics, and she kept telling him that she needed to get gas. He felt that she wanted him to ask why, so finally he did. She told him she wanted gas "because there's a terrorist alert up here for Americans during the games."

So she wanted to make sure she had a full tank in case she needed to make a quick escape?
Hahahaha! Yeah.

What's up next for you?
I'm going to Alaska with Kimmy and Hana. Hana went with Nixon once, but it's going to be my first time. We're supposed to go mid-April, so I hope we can get some good weather and an amazing experience.

Are you nervous?
We're going with Chris Ondo who has filmed for seven years up there with Standard. He's shown us photos of some lines he wants us to do—2,000 vertical foot lines!!! Yikes, we will see!

Vitamins And Minerals Teaser From VegHead Productions

With such a huge shred population in Ontario sometimes you gotta wonder why there's not more crews hitting the streets and making vids. Andrew Wyton got up off his ass and decided to do something about. According to Wyton: After two months of borrowing parent's cars until the early depths of the mornings, putting up with black hearted verbal assault, and after about 81 'My helmet actually just saved my life' wipe outs, VegHead Productions is unleashed for you."

Scenes: Edelweiss with Tha Coop

You don't have to live in Whistler or Quebec to get your shred on--throw it down where ever you are. Here's proof that scenes exist elsewhere. A crew out of Ottawa who call themselves Tha Coop sent over this edit from Edelweiss featuring Max Honeger, Sean Thompson , Ron Tremblay , Jordan Gibson Fraser , Russell Beardsley and Nathan Ensing. You can check out their blog at tha-coop.blogspot.com

If you've got some buds that are banging park laps in your scene film it, edit it and send that shit over videos@snowboardcanada.com.

The 5 W's with Lucas Ouellette

Lucas Ouellette has those hoops in his ears that you could attach a carabiner to. He’s also got a whack of tattoos and lists his nationality as Canadian Vampire. Couple that with his collection of skulls and you might think he’s a sketchy character. Such is not the case at all. He’s a straight-edge, down-to-earth guy that just does things his own way. If you see him spinning laps in the Blackcomb park stop and say what’s up. Just don’t ask him what he’d do for a Klondike Bar.

Name: Lucas Ouellette
Birthdate: Jan. 6, '86
Hometown: Stouffville, Ont.
Now Resides: Drunken Slutsville.... I mean Whistler.
Sponsors: Dinosaurs Will Die, Westbeach, Union & Hoven

Who are your top three shreds of all time?
Scotty Wittlake, Travis Parker & Steve Urkel (yea he snowboards!)

What would you do for a Klondike bar?
Punch my wife in the mouth. Then I'd probably feel bad and give it to her. I don't even like 'em anyway.

Where is snowboarding headed?
Hopefully, we can get rid of all these damn snowboard parks. I mean, they're just a breeding ground for drug use! I'd like to see a strong comeback in slalom riding. I mean for God's sake, it's an Olympic sport! Everyone should like it right?!

When did you move to Whistler?
2005

Why Whistler?
Because Tommy Africa's throw's the sweetest techno dance parties every Friday night! Shit, why else man!?!?

Profiles: Canada's PGS Men

The Canadian Men have a real chance to podium in Parallel Giant Slalom Saturday, so we wanted readers of Snowboardcanada.com to get to know them in advance of tomorrow's race, which starts at 10 a.m. PST. Here's Jasey-Jay Anderson, Matthew Morison, and Michael Lambert.

For more info and full schedule, click here.

And to see how the women did today, click here.

Matthew Morison

Age: 22

Hometown: Burketon, Ont.

Residence: Kamloops, B.C.

Riding since: 2004

Best result: First, World Cup, Limone Piemonte, Italy, December 2008 (though he also had first-place finishes in March 2008 and Feb. 2007)

Best Olympic result: TBD

Sponsors: Scotties, Stalwood Homes, HBC, McDonald's, YYZ Canuck, Sega, Giro

Matt Morison is definitely not your typical snowboarder -- he listens to country music and lists Brooks and Dunn as his favourite band of all time -- and he’s had the lifelong support of his parents, who both actually snowboard. Having already qualified, this will be his first trip to the Games.

“Snowboarding is as close as you can get to pure freedom. What I like best about snowboarding: it’s kind of tough to describe, but, It’s those days you go out, it’s awesome weather, you’re up in the mountains. I don’t even need to be hitting gates, I could be flying down the hill in perfectly groomed conditions on my race board, you know, going fast, making turns, it just feels so good. You get out on the hill, you feel those feelings of turning, it’s, I don’t know, it’s almost like having a super-long work week and being able to hop in your vehicle and floor it away from work. You get that sort of ‘here we go’ feeling. Every day, all the time.”

Matthew Morison

Jasey-Jay Anderson

Age: 34

Hometown: Val-Morin, Que.

Residence: Mont-Tremblant, Que.

Riding since: N/A

Best result: First, World Cup, Limone Piemonte, Italy, December 2009 (though he also had first-place finishes in March 2009, Feb. 2008, Feb. 2007, March 2003 and Feb. 2001)

Best Olympic result: 20th, Torino 2006, (and fifth, SBX Torino 2006)

Sponsors: Tremblant, Chlorophylle, Lys

A former World Cup overall SBX champion, Jasey-Jay Anderson learned his incredible work ethic while training under one of the first, full-fledged and respected coaches in snowboarding, Jerry Masterpool (of Cross M fame), in his early days. Today he’s still a fierce competitor, but he’s also a dad with two daughters, Jora (4) and Jy (3), and has a blueberry farm with his wife, Manon. Oh, and one more interesting fact: he has apparently worn the same ski socks for his whole career. At every event.

“My most memorable moment on a snowboard was winning two world titles (PGS, PSL) at the F.I.S. World Snowboard Championships Whistler 2005Ö in the rain. And why is snowboarding so fun to me? It’s feeling the energy in a carve, and being able to harness this energy.”

Jasey-Jay Anderson

Michael Lambert

Age: 23

Hometown: Toronto, Ont.

Residence: Toronto, Ont.

Riding since: N/A

Best result: First, World Cup, Nendaz, Switzerland, January 17, 2010

Best Olympic result: N/A

Sponsors: Nuinsco Resources, Victory Nickel, Arumat Trading, Murrick Insurance, Vitamin Water, Reebok, POC ski, The Canadian Government

Best known for his behavioural transformation on CTV’s Over The Bolts, Michael Lambert was not expected to have the results needed to make the Canadian Olympic Team, but after seeking the help of a sports psychologist in the fall, he’s been winning World Cup races and has the skills to be a contender. He told Canada Snowboard (not to be confused with Snowboard Canada) about this in his bio interview, posted online over six months ago. “My riding has a lot of really good touch and feel in it but unfortunately with that comes instability and unpredictability-- but I’m working hard to change that and it’s going really well.”

Profiles: Canada's PGS women

Rarely in the spotlight when it comes to the snowboard world, PGS riders tend to get more mainstream attention, kind of in the same way that World Cup skiers do when they do well on the tour. But since it's the Olympics and they're in our backyard, we wanted readers of Snowboardcanada.com to get to know these riders as well. So here's women's team -- Alexa Loo, Caroline Calvé and Mimiko Zakreski --in advance of today's race, which starts at 10 a.m. PST. We'll introduce the guys tomorrow. For more info and full schedule for both the women's and men's races, click here.

Alexa Loo
Age: 37
Hometown: Richmond, B.C.
Residence: Richmond, B.C.
Riding since: 1987
Best result: Third, World Cup, Sunday River, USA, February 2009
Best Olympic result: 20th, Torino 2006
Sponsors: Kin’s Farm Market, VISA, Entrust Management Services
A certified chartered accountant, Alexa Loo has been pursuing the Olympic dream for over a decade now, but she’s still got no signs of slowing down.
“I started in 1987 in Mt. Baker. Skiing was getting boring and most of the other kids my age on the hill were snowboarding. It looked cool and I rented a board and gave it a shot. I was hooked! So, I saved up my money and bought a board. Who’s had the most influence on me as a rider? Mark Fawcett. He has helped me to become the rider that I am now. Without him, I would not have progressed as quickly and as far as I have and I would not be where I am today without him.”

A medal and a great experience of competing for the first time with all other winter sport athletes in the world! A friend convinced me to start racing alpine snowboards after skiing my whole life at the age of 22 and it was a natural transition. And now, what keeps me snowboarding is the constant challenges, being outside, traveling around the world... the lifestyle. My favourite competitive moments were all those mornings at Mont-Tremblant with the hill to ourselves on weekdays and, of course, my first podium finish in a World Cup. [For the Olympics], I’m preparing and doing what I need to do to be on the podium.”

She’s since held on the dream of becoming an Olympian herself.
“Snowboarding is so much fun to me because it is such a free and exhilarating feeling. Being able to ride and move down a mountain at high speeds powered purely by your own inertia, power and balance is empowering. It doesn’t get much better than being able to go to work everyday in the mountains and close to nature. My best contest memory is getting on the podium for the first time at the Limone, Italy World Cup last year. It was snowing so hard outside, that the whole day felt like a dream. I won silver, Matt Morison won gold and Jasey-Jay Anderson won bronze, so it was an amazing day for the whole team. Just seeing how proud our coaches were made the whole experience that much cooler.”

Injured Reserve: L.N.P. Check Up

Ring, ring.

Yeah.

Laurent?

Yup.

Hey, sweet, man. So how you doing? What happened?

Uhm, I’m fine now. I got hurt in Colorado. I was there for the start of the season with Alex Cantin, Louif Paradis, Will Lavigne and Nic Sauve. We went there ‘cause there was snow and not in Quebec. Just to get the legs going. We were there for a month and, like, the third week I over shot a jump and landed on my ass.

Like a park jump?

Yeah a park jump, like, small. It was in Breckenridge. It was only three little jumps. They were pretty easy to go to fast on. It was one of those days where you’re like, ‘Ah, I think I’m going to go after this one.’ I just totally lost control and landed on my ass and fractured my L1 vertebrae. I went to the hospital and they gave me, like, a plastic brace so I couldn't bend my back for six weeks. It hurt a little bit at first to walk. I was mostly lying in bed for six weeks.

What was it like getting back to Canada?

It wasn’t to bad because they gave me, like, pretty strong painkillers. I kept two for the flight. They gave me Percocet’s so, that’s a thing that makes you kinda like high. I took two and I was super mellow I couldn’t feel anything.

Sweet. And are you doing any re-hab or anything like that?

Uhm, I thought I was going to do re-hab and physio and stuff but the doctor said since I was young I could just train myself. I went on the internet and found whatever exercises that would reinforce my back. I’ve just been doing that and walking around. Probably going to start running soon.

When did you get hurt?

It was November 30th. It’s been, like, seven weeks now.

When are you getting back on your board?

I dunno. There’s a Rome trip to Japan on February 15th. I’ve been trying to train so I’ll be okay to get on that one.

What’s your plans for filming? Are you still trying to get a part with Videograss?

For sure. I’m doing one trip with Rome ‘cause next year they are doing a video so they’re starting right now. I’m mostly trying to get some sort of part, like from February til the end, with Videograss.

When is the Rome video coming out?

Next year. 2012. Almost like a one and half year video.

So I guess that means you’re only going to have one song in Videograss this year instead of two, huh?

Yeah. Or maybe one and half. [laughs] I dunno. It all depends how much stupid shit I can produce in the rest of the days I have to film. Like 25 per cent of my part last year was me doing stupid shit.

Are you going to snowboard more or do more stupid shit?

Probably more snowboarding. I’ve been doing stupid shit for the past few weeks now; Drinking beer and listening to music so I really need to snowboard now.

Are you going ride pow in Japan or hit handrails?

When I was there with the Salomon team, like Louif and those guys, we drove around for two days in Sapporo and it’s filled with rails. People always think Japan is crazy for powder but Japan is crazy for architecture too. It’s insane. There’s like marble ledges and stuff. It’s crazy.

The 5 W's with Romain De Marchi

Not much of an introduction's needed for Romain De Marchi. He’s been at the top for years and is showing no signs of slowing down. With a new company and a young family he’s added a whole new workload to an already busy schedule. Neither have seemed to slow him down and you can expect another stand out part in Absinthe's next offering.

And remember where you come from

Where are the best pillows you've ever ridden?
Alaska

When did you decide to start Yesnowboard?
A year ago just a little bit before Christmas !

Why should kids buy a Yes board?
Because it is more then just a board; it's a board with a meaning! The price is so low because we at Yes were fed up by the capitalism in the industry and wanted to give back to snowboarding by making no money on our side so kids can afford a good board at a real affordable price and still have money to go up the hill and test it!

Aaron "P-nut" Johnson Skate and Shred Promo

I first met Aaron 'P-nut' Johnson at the Whistler skatepark. I think it was the first day he moved there from Fredricton, NB. I had been trying to kick flip the step-up for hours and he just rolled in Tre flipped it first try. Man that pissed me off. Since then P-nut has been holding it down at the skatepark and the slopes, where he's become a fixture in the Whistler scene. P-nut rides for Bataleon snowboards, IS Design, Ogio, Pow gloves, Technine, Sound Outerwear, Airhole, Ifound and Elusive boardshop.

Mind Meld: Phil Jacques sets the record straight on getting proper

Phil Jacques was featured on Transworld.com's 120 Second Saturday last weekend and as usual the haters started ripping him apart without having a clue as to what Phil is really all about. We thought we'd give him a chance to respond, plus catch up on a bunch of other really important stuff like the weather in Quebec. Here's what he had to say.

How are things going out in Quebec?

Ah, pretty good. Pretty fucking rainy today though. Like getting something like 50 millimetres. Something crazy like that.

So is all the snow going to rain away?

No, no. We had a bunch but it’s probably going to be pretty icy. I don’t know Maybe it’s going to suck for a couple few days.

How did you end up filming of Transworld this year?

It started when I showed my part to the guys from Videograss. Those guys were like ‘Oh, the crew’s full,’ so they showed the part to Joe Carlino and he was pretty stoked about it. He asked me if I was down for dat and for sure I was. Then Blue Montgomery from Capita kind of helped me financially so I could be in the movie.

You were filming with Brothers Factory last year. How does Will (Brothers Factory co-owner) feel about you filming for Transworld?

It was better than I thought it would be. I was kind of afraid of his reaction. He doesn’t really like it when we film with another crew and don’t come back with him after. I told him I’m going to go do that and then I’ll come back and film with you later, like next year or the year after. Well I’ll be filming with Will if the filmer from Transworld isn’t here.

PJ, Backside Tailpress. Oli Croteau photo.

Any big trips planned with them?

If it’s shitty here I’ll just go to Minnesota for a week ‘cause Gary Milton is over there.

Who?

Gary Milton. He’s one of Transworld’s filmer. He’s with Jake Kuzyk and Jake Olsen-Elm.

Are you at your mom’s house? Is that someone vacuuming in the background?

No, there’s no one but it’s my mom’s house.

What’s that noise?

Ah, it’s my computer I think.

So what happened with your 120 Second Saturday on Transworld? Judging from the comments it looks like some people might have got the wrong impression about you.

Ah, yeah I guess so. I don’t know. It’s weird, like, the first few comments were kind of negative. And then a bunch of other people got what I wanted to say, right? So I don’t know, it just looks like some people thought I was trying to tell them what to do with their boards or something like that, which I wasn’t. I was expressing my opinion on what I thought was a good video shot, not a trick in general. You can do whatever trick you want, that’s for sure. It’s the basis of snowboarding to do whatever fun thing you want. So people thought I was saying like don’t do a certain trick if you can’t do it right. That’s not what I meant. I just meant, like, if you want a shot in a video do the trick right.

Like if you’re pro you’ve got to hold yourself to a certain standard.

Yeah, yeah, that’s what I meant. Pretty much.

And ah…I was looking at what some kid saying in the comment section…now I forgot what I was going to say. Dammit.

[laughs]

Uhm, I don’t know…Fuck. So what you’re saying is you’re tying to hold a higher standard for tricks in video parts.

Yeah. And I was saying ‘we’ as referring to Quebec riders and some people thought I was talkin’ about myself. Obviously it’s not me who set that standard. It was Louif and Laurent [L.N.P.] and people like that who were filming video parts before I was. I’m just trying to follow this path. I’m not telling anyone how they should ride.

Do you think sometimes people take it all a little to seriously?

Yeah, seriously, some people are thinking like, ‘Oh who’s this guy who wants me to do what he tells me to.’ It’s not important at all.

I think, like, any snowboarder who’s been around knows, like who cares. You just do what you want on your board.

Yeah.

Uhm, I dunno, that tail looks like it's saggin a bit Phil. Better get more proper on it. Oli Croteau photo.

What does it mean to you to be filming with Transworld?

Uhm, probably the biggest step I could ever take this year. When I heard it was going to work out I was pretty stoked. A lot more people will see my part so that’s a good thing.

Are you guys finding some new spots out there? It seems like a lot of the spots are getting pretty played.

Yeah, yeah, a bunch of spots are pretty played but we managed to find a couple new spots that are pretty sick. I’d say downtown or really close to Quebec City there’s not many stock rails. You have to go a hour or two around the city to find specific rails but in the city there’s a lot more creative spots so we try to take advantage of that. In every other city around there’s a load of stuff to do.

Do you have some good budget now to support your filming needs?

Ah, yeah Captia’s helping me out a lot and Vans too a bit so I’m pretty stoked on that.

Where did the Capita support come from? Since you’re Canadian are you going to be the next T.J. Schneider or something?

[laughs] Ah, I don’t. We’ll see what’s up. [laughs] No, I don’t know he [Blue] believed in what I could do this year.

So obviously Captia has to pay for your part but was it more a thing of those guys being stoked on your previous parts and then you worked it out afterwards?

Oh, yeah for sure ‘cause Blue didn’t go out to Joe first thing to say like ‘You should take Phil.’ Like I said it was Louif showed my part to Videograss. Then Joe wrote me and then when I said I was down Joe wrote Blue and they talked together. It wasn’t like a sponsor went out to choose me or anything.

Cool man.

See Phil's full part in Time Is Now here: http://www.snowboardcanada.com/video_display/video:1903/Phil-Jacques-Full-Part-From-Time-Is-Now

Jeremy Cloutier escaped the heavy metal street scene in Quebec last spring to round out his part in Whistler with some late season backcountry booters. Damn some of those landings look crusty.

Am-bedded: Geremy Guido

In early December Snowboard Canada headed out to Sun Peaks to do a Locals Laps article for the final issue of the year. We ended up shredding and shooting with Geremy and his bros for a few days. Geremy has some pretty effortless steezs and his crew brought us to a few pow stashes days after it had last snowed so we figured we put his video up. Keep any eye out for Geremy and friends in Winter issue of Snowboard Canada dropping soon. Geremy rides for Billabong, Von Zipper, Capita, Union and 378 Boardshop.

If you've got a video you want us to post send it videos@snowboardcanada.com along with you age, hometown and sponsor list (if any). If it makes the cut we'll put it up.

Jess Kimura Full Part From 6's & 7's

The Kimura is one of the most important submission holds in Jiu-Jitsu. The move may also go by the name of hammerlock or chickenwing. If you’re a UFC fan maybe you’ve heard good, old Joe Rogan get all fired up on the mic about it. Basically the Kimura is known for kicking ass. Kind of like Jess does on a snowboard. Jess rides for Captia, 32, Union, Electric and Volcom.

Injured Reserve: Seb Toots Check Up

The start of the 09/10 season was looking like it would be a banger for Seb Toots. Sitting at the top of the TTR World Tour rankings, he was the youngest rider ever to hold spot, and he had just signed his first legit board sponsor contract with Ride. So when he dropped in for the first time at the Billabong Air and Style in Innsbruck, Austria on December 5th he was probably feeling pretty damn confident. It turns out he may have been a little too confident because he overshot the jump on that first hit, sidelining himself for the next three months.

The little guy appears to also be a man of little words but here’s what he had to say about the bail.

What happened to you at the Air and Style this year?

I was the first guy to hit the jump at Air and Style. I did a straight air and I overshot the jump to the flat. I broke my ankle.

Is this your first major injury?

That is my first major injury, but I broke my collarbone last year and my left wrist two year ago.

How long will you be out for?

I will come back on board at the end of February.

Are you worried about how this will affect your TTR rankings?

This will affect my rankings on the TTR for sure, but I'm not worried ‘cause I will have the time to do couple important contest at the end of this season and maybe finish in a good place. If not, I will have the chance next year as well.

What have you been doing with the down time?

I focus a lot on rehab. I all ready started physio. I'm trying to come back as soon as possible.

Were you supposed to be filming at all this year or are you focusing more on contests?

I was supposed to film but after my injury I think I will do more contest and training then filming. I’d like to film next year but I’m not sure what company I’ll be with.

The Tootsie Roll is almost stock for you now. Are there any new tricks you're thinking about?

There are a lot of tricks on my mind. I learned some at Freestyle Berlin this year. I really want to work on Double Backside Rodeo 900’s and Cab Double Cork 1260’s.

Damn.
